The Fish Health Section of the Asian Fisheries Society encourages active involvement of Student Members and will offer support and opportunities for students attending the 5th Symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture. The following information will be of interest to Student Members who plan to attend the Symposium

WELCOME RECEPTION FOR STUDENTS
The Asia-Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society will host a student reception at the Gold Coast International Hotel from 8.00 - 10.00 pm on Monday 25 November. Students are encouraged to attend this special gathering which will provide an opportunity for networking with other students at the meeting. Drinks and light refreshments will be available. Specific venue to be announced prior to the meeting.

STUDENT AWARDS
The Asia-Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society will provide two awards for presentations from students who are members of the Asian Fisheries Society and/or the World Aquaculture Society. The awards will be judged on the submitted abstracts by a panel of three experts on the following criteria:
   Clarity, impact of work 
   Experimental design, interpretation, conclusion 

The decision of judges will be final. Awards will be announced at the Symposium Dinner on Thursday 28 November.

TRAVEL ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS
The Fish Health Section of the Asian Fisheries Society will provide financial assistance for up to 15 students from the Asia-Pacific region to attend the Symposium. Students requesting assistance must be registered as a student at a recognized university or institute of higher learning or have completed a post-graduate degree within the past 2 years. Applications for financial assistance should include:
   Abstract of DAA5 presentation 
   Short (1 page) curriculum vitae 
   Request and justification for financial assistance signed by academic supervisor 
   Statement of importance of attending the Symposium. 

Applications should be sent to Rochelle Manderson, the Symposium Manager, (Rochelle@ozaccom.com.au) by 31 August 2002. Applications will be judged on merit by an international panel comprising the joint Program/Organizing Committee and successful applicants will be notified by 15 September. The decision of the selection panel will be final.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
The Gold Coast is a popular travel destination for young people. There are many options for quality low-budget accommodation at youth hostels and "backpackers" hotels that can be accessed through the internet. Some examples are provided in the ACCOMMODATION section of the DAA5 website.
